Prestige, The
Starring: Hugh Jackman (Robert Angier), Christian Bale (Alfred Borden), Michael Caine (Cutter), Piper Perabo (Julia Angier), Rebecca Hall (Sarah Borden), Scarlett Johansson (Olivia Wenscombe)
Robert Angier did not die while performing the Transported Man act. Tesla had created a machine which created duplicates of him in his place and transport the real him somewhere else. A water tank was placed underneath a trap door under the machine so that the duplicates would fall and drown in the water tank. Cutter was kept in the dark about this secret. Angier also turns out to be this other person called Lord Cordlow. He stages his own murder to frame Alfred Borden and get revenge and then uses Borden’s desperation to take custody of his daughter. Borden is arrested and sentenced to hang for Angier’s “murder.” Right before being hung, Borden says “Abbra Caddabra.” The movie then cuts to Angier in the old theatre where he sees a bouncing ball and is suddenly shot by Borden! Turns out Borden had used the machine to make himself a double (I think many people believe Borden had a twin brother, but I think he used the machine himself, otherwise, why would he have mentioned the name Tesla to Angier?). Borden and his double had been living their lives as one person (Alfred Borden). They each took turns being Borden and Borden’s mute assistant. Borden even had to cut off his double’s fingers to match the injury he suffered during the bullet catch. Also, Borden confesses to Angier that he loved his wife, Sarah (which explains why Sarah sometimes didn’t believe him when he said “I love you” to her) and his double fell in love with the assistant, Olivia. Borden also tells Angier he had been simply using his double to do the Transported Man act (just the way Cutter suspected he was doing). Therefore, Borden’s double was the one who got hanged. As he lays dying, Angier accidentally kicks over a lantern and sets the place on fire. Borden walks away. As the place burns, we see all the water tanks with Angier’s duplicates in them (he had killed them all). The movie then cuts to the earlier scene of Cutter teaching Borden’s daughter about the 3 stages of a magic act. Borden walks in the room. His daughter runs to him and they hug.
