Departed, The

Billy Costigan is an undercover cop working in Frank Costello’s mob. Oliver Queenam and Dignam are the only two police detectives who know about Billy’s identity as a cop. Colin Sullivan is a police detective planted as a mole by Costello, so Sullivan could inform him of any moves the police makes. Costigan and Sullivan both find out there are traitors on both sides, but do not know who it is yet. They also both date the same woman, police psychiatrist Madolyn Murray. Queenam gets killed by Costello’s men (thanks to Sullivan), and Dignam is forced to take a leave of absence. Sullivan later finds out Costello is an FBI informant, so he arranges for the police to bust Costello and his men during a drug deal, and ends up killing them all (Sullivan shoots and kills Costello himself). Costigan goes to Madolyn and gives her an envelope for her to open (which explains everything) in case anything happens to him. With Costello dead, Costigan goes to the police station and finds out Sullivan is the rat in the police department. Sullivan realizes Costigan was the traitor in Costello’s mob, so he erases Costigan’s identity as a cop in the computer system (which as we know, only Queenam and Dignam knew about). Costigan mails Sullivan a CD recording of Sullivan’s and Costello’s voices (which Costello had recorded) implicating him as the rat. Madolyn listens to it first and finds out Sullivan’s true character. Costigan then tries to meet Sullivan to bring him to justice, but unfortunately, he and another fellow police officer, Brown, gets shot dead by a second Costello rat. Sullivan shoots the other rat and makes it look like Costigan did it. Sullivan gets away with everything and a funeral service is held for Costigan. Final scene shows Sullivan shot dead by Dignam, probably due to Madolyn’s information (thanks to the envelope Costigan had given her). Madolyn lives, pregnant with Sullivan’s or Costigan’s baby.
