Inside Man
Starring: Denzel Washington (Detective Keith Frazier), Clive Owen (Dalton Russell), Jodie Foster (Madeline White), Christopher Plummer (Arthur Case), Willem Dafoe (Captain John Darius)
The head bank robber, Dalton Russell, forces all the hostages to wear the same clothing as the robbers to make them all look alike and indistinguisable to the police. We soon learn it’s not a bank robbery. Dalton and his people only want the contents of a safe deposit box that belongs to the founder of the bank, Arthur Case. The safe deposit box contains evidence of Case’s business relationship with the Nazis 60 years ago that made him wealthy (he used the money he made to open up the bank). Arthur Case asks Madeline White to get the contents, but she is unsuccessful. She does find out about his business with the Nazis. He later bribes her to keep her quiet. During hostage negotiations, Dalton tells Detective Frazier how he will simply walk out of the bank. Frazier mentions that he can’t afford an engagement ring for his girlfriend. The hostages including the robbers are eventually set free (they are all dressed alike) except for Dalton since he can be identified by Frazier. The police find that nothing has been stolen, and there is no dead body (Dalton faked a murder on camera for the cops), the guns are fake, and there’s no trace or evidence of any of the robbers. Frazier goes through the safe deposit box records and finds that #392 is not in the bank records. He opens it up and finds a large diamond ring with a note saying “Follow the Ring”. He does and finds out about Case’s relationship with the Nazis. We later see that Dalton had built a false wall in the storage room in the bank during the “robbery”. He stays inside it for a week. He gets out of the room holding a bag containing diamonds (which also belonged to Arthur Case) and the paper evidence regarding Case, bumps into Frazier who is unaware who he is, and walks out of the bank where his fellow “robber” friends are waiting for him in a car. In the end, Frazier figures it all out when he finds a diamond ring in his pocket which Dalton had placed when he bumped into him.
