New World, The

Plot Summary:

"The New World" is a sweeping adventure set amidst
the first encounter of European and Native American cultures during the
founding of the Jamestown Virginia settlement in 1607.  Acclaimed
filmmaker Terrence Malick brings to life his own unique interpretations of the
classic tale of Pocahontas and her relationships with adventurer John Smith
and aristocrat John Rolfe.  This woman’s remarkable journey of love lost
and found takes her from the untouched beauty of the Virginia wilderness to
the upper crust of English society as we witness the dawn of a New America.

In the early years of the
17th century, North America is much as it has been for the previous five
thousand years — a vast land of seemingly endless primeval wilderness
populated by an intricate network of tribal cultures. Although these nations
live in graceful harmony with their environment, their relations with each
other are a bit more uneasy.  All it will take to upset the balance is an
intrusion from the outside.

One is not long in
coming.

Starring: Colin Farrell (John Smith), Christopher Plummer (Captain Christopher Newport), Christian Bale (John Rolfe), Q’Orianka Kilcher (Pocahantas), Jason Aaron Baca (Parker)

Pocahontas (though this name is never mentioned in the film) and John Smith fall in love. Her father disowns and bans her after finding out she had helped the Englishmen. She goes to live with the Englishmen in their village and is forced to assimilate into their culture (dressing like them, talking like them, etc) and is renamed Rebecca. Though he loves her, John Smith leaves her and goes back to England without telling her, and tells one of his men to tell her he had died after a couple months. Pocahontas grieves for her lover. One day, she catches the eye of another Englishman, John Rolfe. They eventually marry and have a son, though she never feels the same way about him as she does John Smith. Few years later, John Rolfe brings her to England to meet the king and queen. She meets up with John Smith again, but in the end, she chooses to stay with her husband. Eventually, Pocahontas falls ill and dies.
