Starring: Heath Ledger (Ennis Del Mar), Jake Gyllenhaal (Jack Twist), Randy Quaid (Joe Aguirre), Anne Hathaway (Lureen Newsome Twist), Michelle Williams (Alma Del Mar)

After their summer herding sheep together on Brokeback Mountain in 1963, Jack and Ennis part ways. Ennis marries his high school sweetheart, Alma, with whom he has 2 daughters (Alma, Jr. and Jenny), and Jack meets and marries Lureen with whom he has a son. Several years later, Ennis receives a postcard from Jack telling him he’ll be in town. When they meet again, it is clear that their feelings for each other are stronger than ever. Alma catches them together, but says nothing about it. Over the next 20 years, Ennis and Jack periodically meet secretly. Jack wants them to live together on a ranch, but Ennis refuses. Ennis and Alma drift apart and eventually divorce. Frustrated with his relationship with Ennis, Jack sometimes goes to Mexico and sleeps with male prostitutes. One day, a postcard Ennis had sent to Jack is returned, marked “Deceased”. He calls up Lureen on the phone and finds out Jack had died. She explains how Jack had died while changing a tire and the tire exploded in his face. While Lureen is talking, we are shown glimpses of how Jack was beaten to death (probably gay bashing). Lureen tells Ennis Jack was cremated and half of his ashes are with her while the other half was sent to Jack’s parents. She also says that Jack always wanted his ashes strewn on Brokeback Mountain. Ennis visits Jack’s parents. Jack’s father refuses to let Ennis spread his ashes on Brokeback Mountain, indirectly revealing he knew about Jack’s affair with a ranch foreman, but Jack’s mother allows Ennis to go up to Jack’s room and take whatever he wants. He finds his and Jack’s shirts together (the same shirts they wore when they had a fight on Brokeback Mountain) and takes them with him. Alma, Jr. (Kate Mara) visits Ennis
at his trailer where he lives alone. She tells him she’s getting married and would like him to be there. He resists at first, but tells her he’ll be there. Final scene shows Ennis looking at the shirts (his and Jack’s) next to a postcard of Brokeback Mountain.
