Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort)

In the final challenge of the Triwizard Tournament, the 4 competitors have to go through a maze to find the winning Cup. Harry and Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson) are the only ones who find it and both decide to grab it together. As soon as they touch it, they are suddenly taken to a graveyard (turns out the Cup was a portkey) where we see the gravestone of Thomas Riddle (Voldemort’s father). Wormtail (Timothy Spall) appears holding a small and weak figure of Voldemort. With orders from Voldemort, Wormtail kills Cedric with the killing curse. Then, he traps Harry, forcing him against the gravestone, and gets a drop of his own blood and Harry’s blood and puts them in a potion. He drops Voldemort into the potion. A new, stronger, and revitalized Voldemort emerges from the potion. He calls the Death Eaters to come (3 of them turn out to be Crabbe’s father, Goyle’s father, and Lucius Malfoy! The other, I don’t remember). Voldemort is furious with the Death Eaters for not trying to find him all these years. He then forces Harry to duel with him. When their curses hit one another, their wands suddenly connect, and the spirits of Voldemort’s victims appear including Cedric and Harry’s parents. Cedric the spirit tells Harry to take his body back to his parents, and Harry’s parents tell him they can only distract Voldemort for a little bit, so he must run as fast as possible. Harry grabs Cedric’s body and runs towards the Cup, bringing them back to the competition. Harry is shaken and sobbing as he holds on tightly to Cedric’s body. Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson) grabs Harry and takes him away to a room. It is then revealed he was the one who put Harry’s name in the cup and the dragons were his idea. He is about to kill Harry when Dumbledore suddenly appears, with Professor Snape (Alan Rickman) and Professor McGonagall (Maggie Smith), and stops him. Snape gives him a few drops of a truth potion. Turns out he’s not Mad-Eye Moody at all. He is actually Barty Crouch, Jr. (David Tennant), a Death Eater. Barty had trapped the real Mad-Eye Moody into a magical chest and then been taking Polyjuice Potion (as seen in The Chamber of Secrets to transform into Mad-Eye Moody (which explains why Snape’s Polyjuice Potion had been disappearing). At the end of the school year, Dumbledore tells the students the truth about Cedric being murdered by Lord Voldemort. Viktor Krum (Stanislav Ianevski) says goodbye to Hermione, as does Fleur Delacour (Clémence Poésy) to Ron. Hermione tells Ron and Harry to keep in touch. Ron says he won’t, but Harry promises he will. They all leave.

One of the best Harry Potter films so far. Director Mike Newell did cover most of the important events from the book (of course, the books will always be better), but I found the ending a little wrapped up too fast. In the film, it didn’t explain or show what happened to the Death Eaters or how the Minister of Magic handled this crisis. Other than that, the movie was well done with amazing special effects and solid acting by the cast. Ralph Fiennes was perfect for the role of Voldemort. They did a fantastic job of making him look as scary as he sounded in the book.
