Starring: Clive Owen (Charles Schine), Jennifer Aniston (Lucinda Harris), Vincent Cassel (Philippe Laroche), Melissa George (Deanna Schine), RZA (Winston Boyko), Addison Timlin (Amy Schine), Tom Conti (Elliot), Xzibit (Dexter)
Charles is forced to give Laroche $100,000, using up the money he and his wife, Deanna, had saved for Amy’s medical treatments. When he drops by Lucinda’s workplace one day, he finds out Lucinda was only a temp, and the real Lucinda Harris is a different woman (fake Lucinda’s name is actually Jane)! He visits her apartment only to find it being looked at by potential renters. Turns out Jane is a con artist, and had been working together with Laroche and Dexter to scam businessmen out of all their money. She and Laroche are involved in a relationship, so her “rape” wasn’t a rape at all. Charles observes Jane getting off the train with another man (her latest victim). He goes to the same hotel he went with Lucinda/Jane and waits. He sees Jane with the same businessman going into a room, with Laroche (dressing up as a mugger like he did when he “mugged” Charles and Jane) and Dexter (dressed as a bellhop guy) waiting outside. Charles knocks Laroche out and barges into the room, surprising Jane and the businessman. He demands his money back, holding Laroche at gunpoint. A struggle occurs, with Jane, Dexter, and the businessman shot and dead, and Laroche shot, but not dead. Charles wipes off his prints on the gun, goes back to his hotel room, and pretends to be only a witness when the police questions him. He goes to the hotel front desk, sees his briefcase (with the $100,000), takes it and leaves. When Charles goes back to work the next day, his boss charges him for embezzling $10,000 (which was the money he gave to Winston, but was taken by Laroche after killing Winston) from the company. He ends up doing community service in prison where he teaches English to convicts. One day, he reads a story one of the convicts wrote and finds it’s about him. He meets the convict in the laundry room, and sees that it’s Laroche (it was Laroche who was writing in the booklet seen in the beginning of the film). Laroche wants revenge on him for killing Jane. They fight, and Charles ends up stabbing him with the knife Winston had given him (he knew Laroche was still alive, and had asked to do community service in this prison). He tells the police it was self-defense, and they believe him. Detective Church (Giancarlo Esposito) - who is Winston’s uncle - sees Charles. Church tells him he found out it was Laroche who killed Winston. He asks him what happened and Charles tells him it was self-defense. Church doesn’t believe him, but decides not to pursue it.
If you love a good thriller, I would recommend this one. Clive Owen, Jennifer Aniston, and Vincent Cassel were all very good in this psychological thriller. Aniston successfully erased all traces of her Rachel character in “Friends” in this film as she did in The Good Girl, proving her acting talents outside “Friends.” Cassel was marvelous as the creepy and psychotic Laroche. The plot was superb with many surprises and twists at the end as a thriller should have. Well done!
