Father Richard Moore is accused of negligent homicide after his failed exorcism attempt on Emily Rose. He refuses to plea bargain because he wants a chance to tell Emily’s story, so he is put on trial. Defense attorney Erin Bruner is asked to defend Father Moore. The events leading to Emily’s death is told through flashbacks and through the eyes of the defense witnesses. Prosecutor attorney Ethan Thomas argues that Emily was epileptic and psychotic, and could’ve been cured by medication. Erin and Father Moore argues that Emily was possessed by demons and medication wouldn’t have made any difference (terrifying flashbacks strongly imply Emily probably was possessed by demons - six, in fact). Father Moore reads a letter Emily wrote to him about how she had met the Virgin Mary and was offered the chance to leave the pain forever or to remain and suffer so that other people will believe. Emily chose to stay, and died the next day. In the end, the jury finds Father Moore guilty of negligent homicide, but they recommend a time served, so the judge agrees to release Father Moore immediately. Erin is offered a partnership in her firm, but she turns it down.
