Starring: Mark Wahlberg (Bobby Mercer), Tyrese Gibson (Angel Mercer), André Benjamin (Jeremiah Mercer), Garrett Hedlund (Jack Mercer), Terrence Howard (Lt. Green), Josh Charles (Detective Fowler), SofÃa Vergara (Sofi)
Adopted brothers Bobby, Angel, Jeremiah and Jack Mercer are reunited after their adopted mother, Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula Flanagan), was murdered in a convenience store. They investigate to find out what had happened. They see a security tape that clearly shows it wasn’t just a robbery and she was murdered for a purpose (the ‘robbers’ already had the money, but went to the back of the store to kill Evelyn). The brothers manage to track down and kill their mother’s killers. Further investigation leads them to gangster leader Victor Sweet (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Angel finds out Evelyn had an insurance policy for $400,000 which Jeremiah would receive, and Jeremiah may have done illegal deals with Victor Sweet. The three brothers confront Jeremiah. He tells them the insurance policy was started for his daughters. Victor had extorted money, causing Jeremiah to go out of business. As they’re talking, Victor’s thugs show up and a major shootout occurs. Jack is killed. Now, the 3 remaining brothers want to avenge both deaths. Lieutenant Green (the cop investigating Evelyn’s death) shows up, saying there’s a dirty cop involved with Victor - his partner, Detective Fowler. Evelyn had talked to Fowler before she died, but he failed to mention this. Green confronts Fowler, but gets killed by Fowler. The brothers devise a plan to bring Fowler and Victor down. Angel tricks Fowler into thinking he’s wearing a wire (Fowler had confessed his crimes to Angel) while the cops are outside the house. He takes Angel hostage, the cops shoot and kill Fowler. Jeremiah tries to buy off Victor with the $400,000. Victor’s thugs turn on him. Bobby shows up and kills Victor. The 3 brothers are taken in for questioning, but none of them talk, so they’re released. Closing scene shows the brothers fixing up their mother’s house. Bobby remembers a memory of his mother and imagines her talking to him.
A gripping film with a perfect combination of humour, action, and drama. Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese, André, and Garrett Hedlund were all outstanding in their roles as they really worked well together and were believable as brothers. In the film, I liked the way director John Singleton showed how each brother had a different memory of their mother. Three of them had already come to terms about her death, so their 3 memories were shown in the beginning. The 4th brother’s memory was shown at the end after he had found closure, realizing she was really gone. What a great movie!
