Dark Water (2005)
Starring: Jennifer Connelly (Dahlia), John C. Reilly (Mr. Murray), Tim Roth (Jeff Platzer), Dougray Scott (Kyle), Pete Postlethwaite (Veeck), Camryn Manheim (Teacher)
Dahlia finds out the little girl, Natasha (Perla Haney-Jardine) who used to live in 10F (the apartment right above her own) was abandoned by her parents. Dahlia explores the water tank on the top floor and discovers Natasha’s body floating in it (Therefore, Natasha had been haunting apartment 10F). The police talks to Veeck about him not reporting to anybody Natasha had gone missing and arrests him. Dahlia decides to move out of the apartment and find a place closer to her soon-to-be ex-husband, Kyle, so that they can share custody of Ceci (Ariel Gade) easier. As Ceci is taking a bath, Natasha the ghost walks out of the bathroom wearing Ceci’s bathrobe. When Dahlia sees it’s not Ceci, she screams and rushes into the bathroom only to see Natasha trying to drown Ceci. She asks Natasha what she wants, and Natasha says she wants a mommy. To save Ceci, Dahlia agrees to be her mommy forever. The room suddenly floods with water and when the water disappears, Dahlia is dead. The ghosts of Dahlia and Natasha walk to the elevator together. Kyle packs up Ceci’s stuff from the apartment and starts to leave. Ceci gets stuck in the elevator momentarily, and sees her mom’s ghost, telling her she’ll always be there for her. Ceci smiles, and leaves with her father.

THIS WAS AN AWESOME MOVIE. AT FIRST, I WAS SCARED TO DEATH. IT IS A LOT LIKE THE RING, BUT I LOVED IT. IT’S REALLY SAD. MORE SAD THAN SCARY. BUT THIS MOVIE IS GOOD AND I RELLY ENJOYED IT. YOU ALL SHOULD REALLY SEE IT.

The American remake of “DARK WATER” hardly does the original movie any justice at all. Unlike the remakes of “JU-ON THE GRUDGE” and “THE RING” which both used flashy make up and CGI effects to make the viewing experience just that touch more chilling, “DARK WATER” lacks the thrills and chills that other movies, including the aforementioned, have brought us in the past.
The casting is excellent, however the actors are not given much to work with, as the water stain in the bedroom Ceci (Ariel Gade) and Dahlia (Jennifer Connolley) share seems to be the scariest aspect to this poor interpretation.
Fans of remakes will probably appreciate this film and find it interesting to contrast with the original, but will most likely be the film’s only audience as horror fans will be wise to avoid wasting their money.
However if you are going to see this flick, my advice is to watch the original first and then watch this version, and not to go into this film expecting to pee your pants from the horror. The story itself is more of a tragedy, almost in a Shakesperean way, and the ending of the film will leave you wondering how the film spirals off from starting out like “THE GRUDGE” and ending up like “TITANIC”
Let’s just hope that the remake of “THE EYE” doesn’t sink this low.
