Starring: Johnny Depp (Willy Wonka), Freddie Highmore (Charlie Bucket), David Kelly (Grandpa Joe), Helena Bonham Carter (Mrs. Bucket), Noah Taylor (Mr. Bucket)
Out of the 5 children, Charlie Bucket is the only one remaining in the group who did not misbehave or break the rules. The prize? - He gets to own the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory! The only catch is that Charlie must leave his family as Willy Wonka had done when he was a child. Charlie refuses, saying he would never leave his family. Willy is shocked as he hadn’t expected him to refuse. In the meantime, things start perking up for the Bucket family. Mr. Bucket gets a new position at his toothpaste factory, therefore more money and food are available. One day, Charlie meets Willy again while he’s shoe-shining his shoes. Willy asks him if he can help him reconcile with his estranged father. Charlie accepts, and Willy and his dad, Wilbur (Christopher Lee), share a nice reunion. Willy then offers Charlie his factory again and agrees to let his family live with him. Closing scene ends with Willy and the Bucket family sitting down to dinner in the Buckets’ home which is now located inside the factory with powdered sugar (like snow) falling from the ceiling.
Comments? A surprisingly delightful film with wonderful performances by Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore. Luckily, it stayed faithful to the book (the Oompa Loompas, the personalities of the 5 children, etc) with some extras that worked within the movie. The visuals were beautifully done. Fans of this Roald Dahl classic will enjoy this film.
