Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The

Posted by: Luna on Wednesday, June 1st, 2005

Starring: Amber Tamblyn (Tibby), Alexis Bledel (Lena), America Ferrera (Carmen), Blake Lively (Bridget), Jenna Boyd (Bailey)

Four teenage best friends find a pair of jeans that magically fits them all despite their different very different sizes. This summer, they will all be separated for the first time. They make a pact to share the jeans equally (sending it from one person to the next), hoping it’ll bring them all good luck, and write letters to each other describing their adventures while wearing the jeans.

* Lena goes to Greece to visit her grandparents. There, she meets and falls in love with Kostos (Michael Rady) who saves her after she falls into the water and almost drowns when the jeans get snagged on something. Unfortunately, Lena’s grandparents and Kostos’ grandparents hate each other, and Lena is forbidden to see him. Of course, they start dating secretly, but Lena’s grandparents eventually find out and accuse her of turning her back on the family. In the end, Lena (while wearing the jeans) convinces her grandfather to let her see him. She catches him before he leaves for school and they share a few tender kisses, and says I love you to each other.

* Tibby remains at home, and resentfully continues to work at Wallmans, a discount store, while still trying to film her documentary. She meets and befriends a young girl named Bailey who had fainted in the store one day. At first, Bailey gets on Tibby’s nerves especially when she clings to her and declares herself her film assistant. When Tibby finds out Bailey has leukemia, she starts looking at life in a different way. Tibby then gives her the pair of jeans, hoping it will work some magic on her. Bailey makes her promise to finish the documentary. Towards the end, Bailey dies, changing Tibby forever. She decides to call her documentary “Bailey”.

* Carmen visits her father in South Carolina. She is shocked and hurt to find out her dad is engaged and his fiancee has 2 teenagers of her own. Carmen soon starts feeling angry and resentful, like the odd one out (even with the jeans), so she breaks her dad’s house’s window, and goes home. Tibby convinces her to call her father and tell him what’s been on her mind all these years, so she does. Carmen vents all her anger on him and then hangs up on him. When the four friends are reunited, they take a road trip to go to Carmen’s father’s wedding. They talk Carmen into wearing the pants at the wedding. In the end, when her father sees her, he tells his fiancee he won’t start the wedding until Carmen is up there with him because she’s family, too. Carmen and her father hug and make up.

* Bridget goes to a soccer camp in Mexico. She meets and falls in love with Eric (Mike Vogel), one of the coaches at the camp, though it would be forbidden for them to get involved. Bridget constantly flirts with Eric and keeps finding excuses to run into him. One night, Bridget ends up sleeping with Eric (while she’s wearing the jeans) though it’s only mentioned, not shown. She feels regretful afterwards. Bridget writes a letter to Lena describing how ashamed and empty she feels, and how much she desperately misses her mother (who had committed suicide a few years ago). In the end, she returns home and has a sleepover with Tibby and Carmen. The next morning, she runs into Eric who had been trying to find her. He apologizes for what happened and says he hopes to have a shot to date her when she’s 20. She tells him it’s ok, hugs him as a friend, and says it’s a deal.

Comments?…One of the better teen flicks I’ve seen this year. Wasn’t sure what to expect, but it’s really good to see intelligent and witty dramas for teenagers instead of the usual rubbish we see nowadays. It was thoughtful and well-written with a strong cast. Well done!
