Batman Begins
Starring: Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Michael Caine (Alfred), Liam Neeson (Ducard), Katie Holmes (Rachel Dawes), Gary Oldman (Jim Gordon), Cillian Murphy (Dr. Jonathan Crane), Tom Wilkinson (Carmine Falcone)
Bruce finds a cave under his mansion and with help from Alfred and Lucius (Morgan Freeman), he evolves into Batman (When he was a young boy, he fell down a well with bats and since then he has been terrified of them. He chose a bat, so he can confront his fear of them). With help from honest cop, Gordon, and DA Rachel Dawes, Batman tries to clean up Gotham City. He takes down Falcone, the big mob boss/drug dealer who gets arrested and then transferred to Arkham Asylum under the care of the creepy psychiatrist, Dr. Jonathan Crane. To keep him quiet, Crane sprays him with a drug powder which makes people suffer terrifying hallucinations. When Rachel starts investigating why a mentally healthy man like Falcone suddenly went crazy, Crane grabs her and sprays her with the drug powder which makes her go crazy as well. Luckily, Batman shows up and beats up Crane and his men. He literally gives Crane a “taste of his own medicine” and asks who the big boss is that’s running the whole show. Crane tells him it’s Ra Al-Ghul. Batman saves Rachel and is able to give her the antidote (which he had gotten from Lucius) for the drug just in time. Bruce goes to Lucius (who had just been fired by Earle (Rutger Hauer)) and asks him to make more antidote because he found out the drug powder is going to spread throughout Gotham City when it gets put in the water supply and then a device will vaporize the water with the drug into the air. During his birthday party in his mansion home, a guest appears introducing himself as Ra Ah-Ghul. Turns out it’s Ducard, Bruce’s former mentor and trainer! To save the innocent people at his party, Bruce acts obnoxious and tells everyone he hates them, successfully causing them all to leave. Ducard reveals the blue flower that Bruce had found in the beginning of the film was the main ingredient for the drug powder. His intention is to kill the people of Gotham City, so that it will have a chance to rebuild itself without all the corruption. Ducard and Bruce start fighting while Ducard’s men lights his home on fire. A rafter falls on Bruce, knocking him out. Ducard and his men leave while the flames grow furiously. Alfred arrives and saves Bruce. Bruce grabs his Batman costume and Tumbler and leaves for Gotham City. Havoc occurs in the city as the gas slowly spreads and the prisoners of Arkham Asylum (who had already been poisoned with the drug) are set free. Rachel sees Ducard and his men loading the vaporizing machine onto the monorail. During the chaos, she finds out Batman is Bruce. Batman jumps onto the moving train and fights Ducard while Gordon drives the Tumbler, attempting to blow up the pillars which holds the train tracks. When Gordon finally does blow up a pillar, Batman jumps off the train, leaving Ducard to die along with the vaporizing machine, as it falls and crashes onto the ground. The next day, Bruce and Alfred go through the rubbles of what was once his home. Rachel arrives and tells Bruce the man she loved left 7 years ago and never came back, she cannot love the man he is now. She then asks what he’s going to do with Wayne Manor. He says he intends to rebuild it brick by brick. Later, Earle finds out he’d been replaced by Lucius, thanks to Bruce, who owns most of the shares of Wayne Enterprises. That night, Gordon stands on a rooftop with a slightly improved Bat signal. Batman arrives, Gordon tells him he’d been promoted to Lieutenant. He says many of the Arkham Asylum prisoners are still on the loose especially one particular dangerous one who had left a card: the Joker playing card. Batman says he’ll look into it and then jumps off the building, gliding through the air.

Quite simply the best of the Batman films, the one we’ve all been waiting for. It’s darker and more intense. The story seems more believable. Christian Bale was absolutely superb as Bruce Wayne/Batman, taking over Michael Keaton’s position as being the best Batman. I was also glad to see there were several real villains instead of just one or two cartoonish ones. The supporting cast was also awesome. Cillian Murphy was so evil and creepy, Michael Cain was perfect as the loyal butler, Alfred, and Liam Neeson was perfect as the unemotional, remorseless, and authoritative top villain. Great action, cool gadgets. Kudos to Christopher Nolan!
