When Padme tells Anakin she’s pregnant, he starts dreaming of her dying in childbirth. Palpatine confides in Anakin about having seen both sides of the Force and the Dark Side can possiblity prevent death. Convinced by Palpatine’s words and lies about the Jedis, Anakin considers this option, showing more signs of turning towards the Dark Side. When Anakin finds out Palpatine is the Dark Lord of the Sith, he tells Mace Windu. Mace goes to arrest Palpatine and they end up fighting. Anakin objects to Mace killing him without a trial as it’s not the Jedi way. Mace dismisses him and when he is about to finish off Palpatine, Anakin ends up cutting off Mace’s hand with the lightsaber, giving Palpatine the opportunity to kill Mace. Anakin turns completely to the Dark Side, bowing before Palpatine and being named Darth Vader. In the meantime, Obi-Wan has tracked down General Grievous (voiced by Matthew Wood) and killed him. With Anakin’s support and orders from Palpatine, the troops turn on Obi-Wan and the rest of the Jedis. Anakin also kills the younglings who are training to be Jedis. One by one, the Jedis fall until only Obi-Wan and Yoda remain. Obi-Wan tells Padme about Anakin turning to the Dark Side. Padme tries to convince Anakin he’s made a big mistake, but he calls her a traitor and chokes her. Obi-Wan intervenes and fights Anakin in a lava area while in the meantime, Yoda and Palpatine face off. Obi-Wan cuts off both of Anakin’s legs at the knees and his left arm below the elbow. Due to the lava, Anakin catches on fire and gets burned alive. Obi-Wan tells him he loved him as a brother and then leaves him there to die. Weakened by the fight and unable to defeat Palpatine, Yoda manages to escape and meets up with Obi-Wan. Palpatine saves Anakin and has surgeons to replace his missing limbs with steel, and then fits him into the famous Darth Vader outfit. Anakin asks about Padme and Palpatine tells him he had killed her (Anakin doesn’t find out about Padme carrying twins or that she survived long enough to give birth). Meanwhile, Padme gives birth to twins, Luke and Leia, and dies soon afterwards (Ironically, it’s Anakin’s Dark Side powers that killed her, making his dream come true). Senator Bail, Yoda, and Obi-Wan all fear Anakin will sense the children and feel they will be safer apart. Senator Bail and his wife adopt Leia while Obi-Wan takes Luke to Tatooin to be raised by his uncle Owen (Joel Edgerton) and aunt Beru (Bonnie Piesse). Obi-Wan vows to watch over Luke to make sure he’ll be alright. Owen and Beru hold Luke while watching the sunset.
Comments?
This is the best of the Star Wars prequels. The lines and love scenes were still corny and the acting wasn’t top-notch, but the special effects and action were spectacular and fast-paced and the story had some emotional depth to it as it is the darkest of the other films. It Star Wars fans will not be disappointed.
