A group of people sitting in a restaurant for dinner discusses whether life is more tragic or comic. Two directors have different views on the plays they write: one does romantic comedies and the other does tragedies. Another guy tells a story about a couple throwing a dinner party and the host’s long-lost friend, Melinda, drops by unexpectedly. The 2 directors debate about whether the story would be a tragedy or romantic comedy.
* Tragic version - Melinda shows up unexpectedly at Laurel’s (the hostess of the dinner party) place and ends up staying with her for a while. She is trying get back on her feet after a suicide attempt, having gone through a messy divorce and her ex-husband taking full custody of the children because of her affair with a photographer (who ended up leaving Melinda for another woman. We later learn she killed him on purpose). Melinda then falls for a pianist named Ellis (Chiwetel Ejiofor) at one of her friend’s parties, but Ellis ends up falling for Laurel whose marriage to Lee has crumbled. Melinda tries to jump out the window, but Ellis stops her. Laurel asks her friend take Melinda in.
* Romantic comedy version - Melinda is single and childless, and lives in the same building as the dinner hosts, Hobie (Will Ferrell), an unemployed actor, and Susan (Amanda Peet), a filmmaker. Susan becomes preoccupied with sucking up to big-shot filmmaker Steve (David Aaron Baker) to get money for her film. She ends up in bed with him, which is fine with Hobie because he had fallen in love with Melinda. Just when he’s about to tell her how he feels, she tells him she had met someone. By the end, she realizes she loves Hobie as well, and they end up together.
