John Constantine has been roaming around earth using his “gift” to help people and fight evil, hoping to get into heaven ever since his suicide attempt as a teen; Satan’s (Peter Stormare) son wants to unleash hell on earth, hoping to secretly do it without his father knowing. He possesses Angela’s body and tries to get out through her stomach. Turns out his secret helper is Gabriel the Angel (Tilda Swinton) who thinks humans should use more effort to earn God’s grace and forgiveness. She tells John how murderers and rapists can easily get back into heaven just by repenting, so she wants to change that. John saves Angela by committing suicide a second time (he slits his wrists), so Satan will drop by and stop his son’s plan. He stops Gabriel from taking his son out from Angela’s stomach and then flings her into the water. In return, Satan owes John a favor, so John requests him to let Isabel, Angela’s twin sister (who had jumped off a building and gone to Hell which is were suicides go), go to Heaven. Since John had sacrificed himself selflessly for Isabel’s salvation, God finally lets him into Heaven. As John floats towards Heaven, he gives Satan the finger one last time. This angers Satan who then grabs him back from Heaven and rips out his black cancerous lungs (John had been smoking 30 cigarettes a day since he was 15), curing him of lung cancer. This meaning John has to stay on earth and continue his work. After Satan leaves, Gabriel comes out of the water, wing-less and smoky, and tries to get John to shoot her (meaning she’ll go back to heaven), but he just punches her and tells her to get used to pain. On the roof of the building, John gives Angela the Spear of Destiny and tells her to hide it where no one, including him, can find it. She takes it and walks away. John looks out onto Los Angeles.

*After the credits, we see John staring at Chas’s grave. Then Chas suddenly emerges as an angel. He looks at John briefly and then flies away to Heaven.*
