Phantom of the Opera, The (2004)
Starring: Gerard Butler (The Phantom), Emmy Rossum (Christine), Patrick Wilson (Raoul), Miranda Richardson (Madame Giry), Minnie Driver (Carlotta)
Christine and Raoul fall in love much to the Phantom’s dismay and anger. During the “Don Juan Triumphant” opera performance, The Phantom secretly kills the opera’s lead actor and comes onstage to try to win Christine’s heart one last time. Instead, Christine unmasks him in front of everybody including the authorities. The Phantom takes Christine away and sends the auditorium’s chandelier crashing down onto the stage, causing a fire in the opera house. Raoul chases after The Phantom and Christine all the way down to his lair. The Phantom beats up Raoul and threatens to kill him. He forces Christine choose between him or the man she loves. Much to both their shock, she kisses the Phantom. He is so touched that he lets her and Raoul go. She gives him back the ring. He leaves his chamber right before the mob arrives. Meg Giry (Jennifer Ellison), Christine’s friend, finds the Phantom’s mask which was left behind. Forward to 1919 in Paris (the movie’s black and white framing scenes as shown in the beginning of the film), an old Raoul takes the Phantom’s music box, which he got from the opera house auction, to Christine’s grave. Her gravestone reads “Christine Chagny, Beloved wife and mother”. The elderly woman with him is actually Meg. As he is about to leave, Raoul sees a red rose tied with a black ribbon along with a ring attached on Christine’s grave as well - The Phantom had been to her grave as well.
