Starring: Ethan Hawke (Jake Roenick), Laurence Fishburne (Marion Bishop), Jeffrey ‘Ja Rule’ Atkins (Smiley), Maria Bello (Alex Sabian), Gabriel Byrne (Marcus Duvall), Brian Dennehy (Jasper O’Shea), Drea de Matteo (Iris Ferry), John Leguizamo (Beck)

A jail bus with 4 prisoners and 2 bus driver cops stops at Precinct 13 (which is being closed down permanently) on New Year’s Eve for the night due to the snow storm. One of the prisoners, Marion Bishop, is actually supposed to testify in court against the corrupted cop, Lt. Duvall which will send him and 33 other cops to prison. To prevent this, Duvall and his fellow cops intend to kill Bishop and anybody else at Precinct 13 (which includes Jake, the 2 bus driver cops, the other 3 prisoners, Jasper, Iris, and Alex the shrink). The 2 bus driver cops are killed first. Jasper tries to talk Jake into giving Bishop to the men outside, but Jake refuses. Much to Jasper’s objections, Jake decides to arm the prisoners so that they can all have a fighting chance. Lots of Duvall’s men try to get inside Precinct 13, cool SWAT tactics and flash grenades are used. One of Jake’s cop friends drops by to celebrate New Year’s and almost gets killed. The prisoners are suspicious of him and thinks he’s a spy for the bad cops. Smiley and Beck (the 2 prisoners) try to escape, but both get killed. Rosen (Kim Coates) and Alex runs to a car and tries to drive off and get help, but both gets shot and killed. The remaining five sneaks through a secret tunnel, but are quickly discovered and surrounded by Duvall and his men. It is then revealed that Jasper is the traitor. Iris and Jake’s cop friend gets away in a truck, but the truck gets turned over. One of Duvall’s men tries to kill them, but Iris kills him instead. Jake and Bishop sides against Duvall. Bishop gets shot by Duvall. Jake and Duvall shoot each other with Duvall ending up dead and Jake getting wounded. Bishop grabs both guns, tells Jake not to follow him, and walks away. Jake tells him he’ll find him someday. Iris, the police, and the paramedics arrive and rescues Jake. One of the police asks Jake if there’s anybody else out there and he says no.

Comments about this movie?
A solid, entertaining flick with great action, decent dialogues, and enough tension and suspense to keep the audience watching. Once again, Ethan Hawke plays a good cop and gives another great performance along with Laurence Fishburne, Gabriel Byrne, John Leguizamo and Brian Dennehy. I thought Byrne played a very convincing villain, but I wish he could’ve had more onscreen scenes with Hawke and Fishburne. Overall, a decent action thriller that won’t disappoint.
