The Baudelaire children are gifted with extraordinary talents, which would prove vital to their survival in a series of unfortunate events. Their home is mysteriously destroyed, along with their parents. They become orphans in a flash, and that is when their sinister guardian, Count Olaf, steps in…
Count Olaf (Jim Carrey) is a fiend who tries to kill the Baudelaires to inherit fortune. From impersonating a one-legged sea captain, to pretending to be a renowned snake expert, no matter what he does to kill them, the youngsters outwit them through booksmarts and ingenuity!

MovieMuckers review: Personally, MM staff all agreed that the story was too slow! The plot was simple, and we hoped that there would be twists throughout story. Half-way into the movie we wanted to leave because we actually gotten tired of the special effects compensating for the lack-lustre dialogue. The settings were awesome, but that was it. The characters all seemed to adopt quirks or habbits, which become tiresome to the audience. And the finale, when the mystery is unravelled, was nothing spectacular — no big action sequence, no witty remarks, no zinger catch phrases. If only there’d be something more memorable for the kids to talk about.

Starring: Jim Carrey (Count Olaf), Meryl Streep (Aunt Josephine), Jude Law (Lemony Snicket), Emily Browning (Violet Baudelaire), Liam Aiken (Klaus Baudelaire), Kara & Shelby Hoffman (Sunny), Timothy Spall (Mr. Poe)

Count Olaf finds out that he cannot inherit the fortune if the kids die unless he’s a blood relative or married to the family. He then puts on a ceremony disguised as a play to force Violet into marrying him. Violet agrees to it only because Olaf had suspended Sunny in a cage from his tall tower and threatened to drop and kill her. Justice Strauss (Catherine O’Hara), who is a real judge, performs the ceremony (though she thinks she’s just part of the play). Mr. Poe, the Detective (Cedric the Entertainer) and a bunch of other people also attend. While the ceremony is taking place, Klaus climbs the tower to rescue Sunny. When he reaches the top, he discovers a powerful lens shaped like an eye. He finds out Olaf had been using it to set other people’s houses, including his parents’, on fire by beaming the sun right onto their homes. In the meantime, Violet reluctantly and slowly signs the marriage certificate. She tries to tell the audience what Olaf is up to. Mr. Poe finally realizes what a crook he is, but it is too late. Olaf triumpantly holds up the marriage certificate. At this point, Klaus beams the lens on to the certificate and it goes up in flames. Olaf is busted and everybody surrounds him. Lemony Snicket narrates that Olaf escaped. Mr. Poe takes the kids back to their parents’ burnt house once more. The kids find the missing letter their parents had once sent to them while away on their Europe trip. Kind and loving words were written along with a spyglass enclosed. They return to Mr. Poe’s car and all 3 sleep peacefully in the backseat as he drives.
