Sam is separated from his wife, Marie, and soon discovers she has moved on with her life and is in a relationship with someone else. She tells him not to come around anymore and eventually files for a divorce, much to Sam’s dismay; Sam hates how his salesman job forces him to lie to people to sell things, so he applies for a loan with the government to start his mobile tire replacement business. Although he is told the application will be processed in 8 to 10 weeks, he still checks his mail every single day. He then quits his furniture salesman job before the loan even goes through and uses his brother, Julius’s (Michael Wincott) Goodyear business to pre-order 550 tires. Needless to say, the loan is denied and Julius disowns Sam for stealing from him. The rent is also long overdue, so it looks like he is on the verge of being evicted. On the tv, Sam watches a news story about an army guy who took a helicopter and landed on the White House lawn. He forms a plan to crash an airplane into the White House, so he withdraws all his money to buy some gasoline and other supplies. At the airport, he carries a gun and a briefcase containing the gasoline and a detonator. Sam shoots his way onto the plane and demands the pilots to take off. The captain tries to stall him by saying he needs to call the tower, so Sam shoots the co-pilot in the head (in a bloody display). He then grabs a woman passenger to be the co-pilot. The captain tells him he can fly the plane on his own, and Sam shoots him in the shoulder. A shot suddenly comes through the windows of the plane’s closed doors and hits Sam. Three more shots kill him. We see news reports about what had happened. Closing scene ends with Sam running around in his apartment, flying a model airplane.
Comments? Truly one of the most touching films ever made. Sean Penn brings Sam Bicke to life, proving once again he’s one of the greatest actors of all time…
