Polar Express, The
Starring: Tom Hanks (voices of Hero Boy/Father/Conductor/Hobo/Scrooge/Santa Clause), Leslie Harter Zemeckis (voice of Sister Sarah/Mother), Eddie Deezen (voice of Know-it-all), Nona M. Gaye (voice of Hero Girl)
Hero Boy and the other kids arrive at the North Pole. Hero Boy, Hero Girl, and Lonely Boy (voiced by Peter Scolari) gets lost for a little, but then finds themselves in Santa’s sack which gets carried out to Santa’s sleigh. Santa eventually appears and the crowd of elves cheer and go wild. He gives kind words to the kids and decides to give Hero Boy the first gift for Xmas. Hero Boy receives a bell and after saying he believes, he can hear the bell ring. Santa and the reindeers ride off on the sleigh to deliver the gifts. The kids then board the train and gives the Conductor their tickets who then punches out words on the tickets. Hero Girl’s ticket says “Leader”. Hero Boy’s word is “believe”. On the way home, Hero Boy realizes he has lost his bell and is crushed. He gets dropped off at his house and is soon awakened by his sister, Sarah, on Xmas morning. After most of the presents have been opened, Hero Boy finds a present addressed to him which turns out to be the bell with a note from “Mr C.” telling him he lost it on his sleigh and to get his pockets sewed back up. When Hero Boy and Sarah shake the bell, it rings (which means they both “believe”), but when their parents shake it, there’s no sound (meaning they don’t “believe”). The film closes with Hero Boy saying most kids, including Sarah, have stopped hearing the bell over the years, but as an old man, he still hears it clearly.
Personal comments about this movie?
A heartwarming computer animated film that kids will love, but also has enough appeal for adults to keep watching. The animation was absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking. It’s even better watching this film in 3D. The sequences on and around the train were beautifully illustrated. One of my favorites was with the journey of the lost train ticket. The ending was simple and sweet. I could’ve done without the singing though.
