Ray

Posted by: Luna on Friday, October 29th, 2004

Starring: Jamie Foxx (Ray Charles), Kerry Washington (Della Bea Robinson), Regina King (Margie Hendricks), Clifton Powell (Jeff Brown)

Ray’s ex-lover, Margie, dies of an overdose. She had borne him a son 3 years ago. Della Bea had known about Margie and her affair with Ray and their son all along. She suggests to Ray to send money, but he tells her he had already been sending money for a while. Ray gets arrested the 2nd time for smuggling drugs into the US. He ends up in a drug rehabilitation centre. He suffers severe physical symtoms due to heroin withdrawal, but recovers eventually. During another one of Ray’s dreams, he “sees” his dead mom and young brother, George again. His mom makes him promise again not to become a cripple and George tells him that his drowning wasn’t his fault and forgives him. After that, Ray does keep his promise for good. He never does drugs again and continues to make music hits and wins many Grammys. Before the credits, we find out that Ray’s greatest moment was when the State of Georgia formally apologized to him in 1979 (because he got banned from playing in Georgia in the 60s when he refused to play his music in Augusta where the show was segregated - it was his first stand against segregation). They announced that his song, “Georgia on my Mind”, will become the state song of Georgia.

Comments about this movie?
A spectacular and inspiring movie with wonderful performances by Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, and Regina King. One of the best biopic films I’ve seen. Foxx really stepped into the role of Ray Charles. Throughout the movie, I was convinced he WAS Ray Charles with his smile, mannerisms, the way he talked, the way he moved, the way he played the piano, the way he sang, etc. Foxx’s Best Actor Oscar nomination was well deserved. As for the movie, it was darn terrific. You don’t have to be a Ray Charles fan to appreciate this film. The director, Taylor Hackford, did a fantastic job of taking the audience back to the 50s and 60s era with the music, clothes, cars, city life, etc. He engaged us to another place in another time. What a wonderful movie!
