Machinist, The
Starring: Christian Bale (Trevor Reznik), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Stevie), Aitana Sánchez-Gijón (Marie), John Sharian (Ivan), Michael Ironside (Miller)
Turns out Ivan doesn’t exist. He is more like Trevor’s conscience. His encounters with Marie and Nicholas were also made up. What happened was, a year ago, Trevor got into a hit-and-run and killed little Nicholas (Matthew Romero Moore) with the red car he had “seen” Ivan driving in (but, it’s actually Trevor’s car, not Ivan’s, of course). Ever since then, he has been racked with guilt which caused his insomnia and drift into madness. Trevor was the one writing all the mysterious post-it notes around his place. The hangman game ends up saying “killer”. Once he realizes and remembers all of this, he goes to the police and turns himself in. As he walks into the station, he sees Ivan/his conscience “waving” at him. As he goes into his jail cell, he finally goes to sleep.

A brilliant film that really leaves you thinking by the end of it. Sort of like 21 Grams, which was another great film. Christian Bale’s performance was superb, definitely Oscar-worthy though I was a little shocked to see his unhealthy, skin-and-bones figure. Not exactly a fast-paced movie, but there was lots of good character development and cinematography and the plot kept me interested enough to make me wonder what’s going on and what’s going to happen next. Overall, I enjoyed it. A definite recommendation.
