Grudge, The (2004)
Starring: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Karen), Jason Behr (Doug), Clea DuVall (Jennifer Williams), William Mapother (Matthew Williams), KaDee Strickland (Susan Williams), Bill Pullman (Peter)
When a person dies during extreme rage or sorrow, the emotions remain and a curse is born. It will kill anybody it comes in contact with. Turns out there was a Japanese family that used to live in the house (a father, mother, and son); Karen visits Peter’s widow and looks at a bunch of pictures of her and Peter. She then sees the mother, Kayako, in every single picture, lurking in the background and watching the couple. When Karen returns home, she finds out that her boyfriend, Doug, went to look for her at the house. In a panic, she frantically runs to the house to stop him. When she arrives, she hears voices and walks up the stairs and almost kinds of walks into a time passage to the past (there is a light and suddenly she see Peter exploring the rooms). During Peter’s exploration, Karen finds out that the mother had been in love with Peter and had written his name all over her diary. The father, Takeo Saeki, had found the diary and, in a rage, killed Kayako, his son Toshio, and the cat and then hung himself. Karen runs downstairs and sees Doug on the floor, shaken and unable to speak or move. Suddenly, she sees the freakish-looking mother crawl down the stairs. Knowing there’s no escape, Karen knocks the gasoline down (which had been left by Detective Nakagawa before he was killed) and uses Doug’s lighter to set the place on fire before the mother turns on her. Next scene shows Doug’s body with a white sheet over him at a hospital and the police mentioning how Karen was lucky to have survived and was able to save the house. As Karen examines the body, she suddenly hears the sound of the mother and realizes she is right behind her. When the mother turns around, Karen screams and the screen turns black.
Personal comments about this movie?
I have to say I liked this movie. Don’t know why Rotten Tomatoes had such a poor rating for this film. Better than the Ring. Very freakish and creepy! I didn’t know who was creepier, the mother or the son with the black mouth. Judging from the ending, I guess they might make The Grudge 2? This was one of the few scary movies that actually made me jump. I think one of the scariest scenes was when that woman jumped into her bed and then the mother crawled under the covers towards her. When the woman lifted the covers, she saw the mother’s freakishly scary look. Yikes!
