Being Julia

Posted by: Luna on Friday, October 15th, 2004

Starring: Michael Gambon (Jimmie Langton), Annette Bening (Julia Lambert), Leigh Lawson (Archie Dexter), Shaun Evans (Tom Fennel), Jeremy Irons (Michael Gosselyn)

Julia and Tom get involved in a passionate affair. His true colors show when he dumps her for Avice (Lucy Punch), a pretty, budding actress. Still, Julia helps her get an audition for her and Michael’s new play. Avice gets a big part in the play and Julia sees that she’s actually a decent actress (though we can see a revenge plan forming). On opening night, Avice signs a contract with Michael to do shows regularly. Julia’s revenge plan was to upstage Avice and make her look like a fool which she brilliantly does though the audience is oblivious and thinks it’s part of the play. Julia ends up being the star and Avice just a supporting role. The audience loves Julia and is enthusiastically congratulated by everybody including Michael and Jimmie (her vision of her mentor who has been dead for many years). Avice furiously tells Michael she’s going to quit, but unfortunately, she had already signed a contract promising to do shows for a year. The film ends with Julia dining alone in a restaurant and giddy with laughter.

Wonderful film with brilliant performances by Annette Bening, Jeremy Irons, Michael Gambon, and the rest of the supporting cast. Bening certainly deserved that Oscar nomination. She shined in every single scene. Everything was stunning: the story, costumes, cinematography, art direction. The plot got more interesting as it went on, so needless to say, you won’t be bored. The film deserved all the praise it got. Definitely worth checking out!
