Garden State
Starring: Zach Braff (Andrew Largeman), Natalie Portman (Sam), Peter Sarsgaard (Mark), Alex Burns (Dave)
When Andrew was 9 years old, he had accidently caused his mom to be paralyzed in a household accident. Because of that he had been on lithium and other medications for many years. After nine years away from home, he returns to New Jersey for his mom’s funeral. He stops taking the lithium while in NJ and starts to “feel” again. Andrew meets beautiful and free-spirited Sam who completely changes his life (after only 4 days). He reconciles with his father (Ian Holm). As a going-away present, Mark returns Andrew’s mother’s favorite necklace to him. At the airport, Andrew and Sam share an emotional good-bye. He tells her he needs to work out his issues by himself, but promises to keep in touch. He gets on the plane and Sam ends up sobbing in a phone booth. The phone booth suddenly opens and it’s Andrew. He tells her he’s in love with her and would rather stay in NJ and work out his problems with her than without her. Then they kiss.
Personal comments about this movie?
A wonderful film debut by Zach Braff who wrote, directed, and starred in the movie. It has become another one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s a film I’m sure a lot of people (including myself) can really relate to on some levels. With many funny and memorable scenes (e.g. Portman dancing in her bedroom just to be ‘unique’), sharp and witty dialogues, and brilliant acting by Natalie Portman, Zach Braff, and Peter Sarsgaard, this film will make a worthy addition to your DVD collection.
