Home at the End of the World, A

Posted by: Luna on Friday, July 23rd, 2004

Starring: Colin Farrell (adult Bobby Morrow), Dallas Roberts (adult Jonathan Glover), Robin Wright Penn (Clare), Sissy Spacek (Alice Glover)

Clare ends up pregnant with Bobby’s baby (though it’s never mentioned the child it’s Bobby’s). Jonathan, Bobby, and Clare buy a house in a little country town called Woodstock and they all live together to raise their little daughter, Rebecca. Bobby opens up a cafe in town. Jonathan soon finds spots on his skin, which might be an indication of HIV/AIDS (given his active homosexual lifestyle). Over a period of time, Clare decides this isn’t the life she wants and takes baby Rebecca for a trip. She asks Bobby if he wants to go with them and he answers no. She leaves with Rebecca and is never seen again. Deep down, Jonathan and Bobby both knew she wouldn’t be coming back. They eventually scatter Jonathan’s father’s ashes around their country home. As they walk back home, they make plans to repaint Rebecca’s room even though they know they won’t see her again for a while. Jonathan then tells Bobby this would be a good place to scatter his ashes, too. The last scene shows Jonathan going into the house while Bobby stands outside looking at the house. He slowly walks back inside.

Personal comments about this movie?
Wow, this film sure proved that Colin Farrell can really act. I really think he should choose to do more movies like this. He did such a beautiful job portraying innocent, wide-eyed Bobby. Robin Wright Penn and Sissy Spacek were wonderful, too. I was happy to see a lot of character development. There was no closure, but I am satisfied with the way they ended it. If you are expecting a Hollywood movie with a happy ending, then this is the wrong film for you.
