Before Sunset

Posted by: Luna on Friday, July 2nd, 2004

Starring: Ethan Hawke (Jesse Wallace), Julie Delpy (Celine), Vernon Dobtcheff (Bookstore Manager), Diabolo (Philippe)

Jesse and Celine spend a couple hours in Paris together before he has to leave for the airport. While Philippe is driving them to Celine’s place, she reveals to Jesse that she hasn’t been happy with her current and past relationships for the past 9 years. All the memories had come rushing back when she had read his book about their encounter nine years ago. Jesse then confesses that he’s stuck in a loveless marriage. He had only married his wife because she became pregnant. He loves his 4-year-old son, but isn’t in love with his wife. They end up back at her apartment. She sings a song for him which is about Jesse and their night together. Jesse pops a Nina Simone CD in her player. Celine starts dancing to the song and describes what she was like in concert. She reminds him that he’s going to miss his plane, but he happily says “I know”. Screen fades to black and viewers are left to interpret what would’ve happened between them.

Comments about this movie?
An excellent sequel which lived up to the original Before Sunrise. Jesse and Celine reunite 9 years after their first night encounter. Both characters have matured physically, emotionally, and mentally. Like the original, it’s mostly walking and talking, but the dialogue is still witty, smart and brilliant. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy have never been better. What made this film so wonderful was that there didn’t have to be any physical intimacy or kissing yet the chemistry between the 2 characters was still obviously there. In fact, the attraction has become stronger, but there are too many obstacles. They are not young and carefree anymore. They have lives and committments. I liked how the film ended because there really was no simple closure. Jesse and Celine are obviously still in love, but there are too many obstacles for them to be together. Yet, there still seemed to be that hope…
