Terminal, The
Starring: Tom Hanks (Viktor Navorski), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Amelia Warren), Stanley Tucci (Frank Dixon), Chi McBride (Mulroy), Diego Luna (Enrique Cruz)
Viktor ends up living at Gate 67 in the airport since he can’t go home or enter the US. In the meantime, he makes friends with the employees at the airport. He helps Enrique (the food service guy) hook up with Torres (Zoe Saldana), the Customs officer woman, and they eventually get married. Viktor falls in love with Amelia and reveals to her the contents in the peanuts container he’s always carrying around. It contains 56 autographs of his father’s favorite jazz musicians. The reason he came to New York is to get the last of the 57 autographs (Viktor’s father died before collecting #57) from Benny Holston who will be playing at the Ramada Inn. After more than 9 months later, peace breaks out in his country, and he can finally go home, but first he must get the 57th autograph. Frank (the head of Immigration) threatens to deport Viktor’s friends if he doesn’t return home. To defy his threats and help Viktor, the janitor runs outside and stands in front of an airplane with a mop to get deported on purpose. Viktor tries to leave the airport. Frank orders the immigration officers to arrest him, but they end up letting him enter New York. Instead of pursuing him, Frank gives up and lets him go. Viktor finally gets the 57th autograph from jazz musician, Benny Holston, hops into a cab, and asks to go home…Oh, and Amelia ends up back together with the married guy she was dating.
Comments about this movie?
Another wonderful, wonderful film directed by Steven Spielberg. He wove a simple story with such warmth and insightfulness. I liked how it illustrated people living in a country busy with their personal and business lives to slow down and reflect on other aspects of their lives. Great performance by Tom Hanks. Recommended film!
