Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Posted by: Luna on Friday, June 4th, 2004

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), David Thewlis (Prof. Lupin), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore), Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall)

It was not Sirius Black who betrayed Harry’s parents to Voldemort. It was Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall) who did. Peter was not dead, as everyone had thought. He had been hiding at the Weasleys as Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers, for many years. Before they could bring Peter to the Dementors and prove Sirius’s innocence, chaos takes place and Peter escapes again as a rat. Sirius is then captured again and will be given the Dementor’s Kiss (which will suck out his soul). Dumbledore is the only person who believes he is innocent, so he indirectly suggests to Harry and Hermione that they use the time-turner device (which Hermione had been using to go to several classes at the same time) to save Sirius and another innocent life. So, they go back through time and save Buckbeak (the Hippogriff) from an execution and free Sirius from a prison cell. Sirius jumps on Buckbeak’s back and escapes. Harry and Hermione return to the hospital wing just on time before anyone can find out what they did; meanwhile, Lupin resigns from his job at Hogwarts because someone had slipped that he is a werewolf. Saddened by this news, Harry mopes on his way to the dining hall. He cheers up when he discovers a Firebolt broom was given to him. The last scene shows him flying his new broom joyfully.

Personal comments about this movie?
Among many others, I am a big fan of the Harry Potter books. Like the other Harry Potter movies, the special and visual effects were awesome. Even though the director probably couldn’t fit everything in, I wish he would’ve put more Quidditch matches in the movie. Another thing is, in the book, Harry always hears his parents’ screams when the Dementors are near him, but in the movie, he doesn’t hear them very often. Other than that, the movie was pretty well done. I think Chris Columbus would’ve done a better job…Bring on the Goblet of Fire movie! The book is super thick, so I don’t know how they’re going to fit it in 2 hours slot. They’ll have to cut out a lot of important stuff, unfortunately.
