Joe used to have a relationship with the dead girl, Cathy, and was the last person to see her alive. They had actually dated and lived together for a while and then broke up. When they hooked up again one night, she reveals to Joe she had a brief fling with a married plumber and is pregnant with Joe’s child. Joe wanted nothing to do with her and walked away. Her death turned out to be an accident as she ran after him, slipped, fell off the pier, and drowned because she couldn’t swim. The married plumber ends up being accused of murdering Cathy despite Joe knowing it was an accident. Overwhelmed by guilt, Joe leaves a note to the lawyer explaining what happened, but it never gets read or taken into account as the plumber is sentenced to hang. Joe takes the mirror he got as a gift from Cathy and throws it into the water, and walks away.
