Taking Lives

Posted by: Luna on Friday, March 19th, 2004

Starring: Angelina Jolie (Illeana Scott), Ethan Hawke (Costa), Kiefer Sutherland (Christopher Hart), Gena Rowlands (Mrs. Asher), Olivier Martinez (Paquette)

Costa is the killer, not Hart. Hart was after Costa only because he owed him a lot of money. Costa had set him up and then killed him; he also kills his mother, Mrs. Asher, and Illeana catches him standing over her dead body, splattered with blood, in the elevator. The police tries to catch him, but he is able to get away and take over another person’s identity; Illeana gets in trouble for sleeping with a serial killer and is fired from the FBI; seven months later, we see that Illeana is pregnant with Costa’s twins and is living alone in a isolated house in Pennsylvania. Costa shows up and says he had been watching and tracking her movements. He grabs her and stabs her in her very pregnant belly with a pair of scissors. She doubles over, gasping, but then grabs the scissors and stabs him in the chest! She takes out her fake belly, while he looks at her in shock. Illeana had been faking her pregnancy to lure him to her and out of hiding. He falls over and dies. She then calls the police and tells them it’s done.

Comments about this movie?
I thought Angelina Jolie was believable as a FBI agent. Ethan Hawke portrayed a psychopath convincingly enough, but it wasn’t a brilliant performance. They should’ve put more twists into who the real killer was. The fact that Costa was the killer wasn’t a huge surprise. There wasn’t enough suspense to make this a great thriller flick. The only real twist is at the ending.
