Lehiff and Mick form a plan with John to take Deirdre hostage and force her older, married boyfriend, Sam (who is a bank manager) to pay a ransom. They all wear masks so they won’t be identified and John makes a deal not to talk since Deirdre will recognize his voice. Mick and John go with Sam to get the money while Lehiff stays with Deirdre at her place. Deirdre tries to escape, but Lehiff catches her and punches her in the face, and forces her back in the house. Sam is able to get the money and is about to walk back to the car when, at the last minute, his estranged wife shows up and starts beating him up. John and Mick are forced to leave without the money. While driving, Mick sees the rock throwing boy who was responsible for the bus crash and for getting him fired (the boy had thrown a rock through the windowshield of the bus, causing Mick to lose control of the bus and crash. No one else had seen the boy, so he got fired). He drops off John and decides to pursue the rock throwing boy who is riding a bike. Unfortunately, Mick crashes the car, causing the car to hang halfway off a canal. The boy just watches while Mick pleads with him for help. The boy puts his hands down on the back of the car, but then lets go, causing the car to crash into the canal. In the meantime, John arrives back at Deirdre’s house. Lehiff demands to know where the money is and the two end up arguing and fighting. Deirdre realizes it’s John under the mask. Lehiff shoots John and escapes in a car. Cop Jerry Lynch and the reporter sees Lehiff zooming past them, so Jerry decides to chase him. Lehiff shoots Jerry and is about to kill him when the reporter grabs Jerry’s gun and kills Lehiff. Jerry survives and the reporter earns his respect and admiration. John ends up in the hospital, but survives. Deirdre chastises him for always taking the long route in life and screwing up (e.g. their relationship). In the end, Mick survives the canal crash, but is in a wheelchair; John’s best friend, Oscar, hooks up with Sally (who got rid of her mini-moustache); John and Deirdre gets back together after he tells her he wants to marry her and have kids; Sam ends up back with his wife though he’s not any happier; John’s former boss, Mr. Henderson (Owen Roe) drives home from work when suddenly the rock throwing boy throws a rock through his windshield.
Comments…
A well put-together Irish (Gotta love those Irish accents!) film with lots of interesting characters whose lives all intersect in one way or another. It was entertaining from start to finish.
