Nathan Algren joins Katsumoto and the Samurai to fight against the Japanese army. Though the Samurai are clearly outnumbered, they all intend to fight to the death for their honour. When it’s down to the last few Samurai left including Katsumoto and Nathan, one of the Japanese officers orders the shooting to stop. Katsumoto gets shot and chooses to die the honorable way by stabbing himself with his sword. After the battle, the Japanese Emperor (Shichinosuke Nakamura) decides to sign the treaty with the US. Nathan enters and presents Katsumoto’s sword to the Emperor. He stands up for himself to the Emperor. The Emperor then decides not to sign the treaty, saying that Japan shouldn’t forget it’s origins and traditions even though it’s being modernized. He asks Nathan how Katsumoto died. Nathan tells him he won’t tell him that, but he will tell him how he lived. Closing scene shows Nathan returning to Taka’s (Koyuki) village in the mountains.
