Posted by: Luna on Friday, November 14th, 2003

Starring: Russell Crowe (Captain Jack Aubrey), Paul Bettany (Dr. Stephen Maturin), James D’Arcy (1st Lt. Tom Pullings), Edward Woodall (2nd Lt. William Mowett)

The French ship Acheron gets captured by the British. The French captain had died in the assault and it becomes up to the doctor of the ship to hand over his sword to Jack Aubrey. Later, Dr. Maturin informs Aubrey that the doctor had actually died several months earlier, which means that it was the captain who had handed over his sword to Aubrey. Aubrey orders Dr. Maturin to leave his work on the Galapogos Islands and escort the ship to England.

Personal comments about this movie?
One of the most entertaining and well-done movies ever made would describe this film. Outstanding performance by Russell Crowe proving once again he is one of the best actors of this generation. Paul Bettany was also excellent as the surgeon of the ship and a naturalist. The details of the settings on the ship were illustrated wonderfully, showing the harsh conditions the crew live in. From the claustrophobic and unsanitary sleeping quarters to the extreme weather conditions, it is no easy ride for anybody. The war battles between the French and the English were done realistically with cannon balls shooting at each other, creating huge holes in the ship and killing anybody in it’s path… Definitely a must-see!
