Nick and Sarah fall in love, have a brief and passionate night together, but cannot be together due to the circumstances (she is married to Henry and has a son and he cannot leave his work). Years later, Sarah has a 5-year-old daughter. She decides to travel to Chechnya to find Nick who is missing and may be in trouble because of his involvement with a corrupt CIA operation (he had made a deal with Steiger (Yorick van Wageningen) in exchange for financing his work in relief camps). She eventually finds him, but he is being held hostage by rebels. Sarah tells him they have a daughter together. They escape together, but the rebels are close behind them. When they almost reach the Red Cross station, he tells her to run. Nick gets shot a couple times by the rebels, but survives. As Sarah is running, she steps on a landmine and gets killed. Closing scene ends with Nick visiting Sarah’s house in London. He sees his little daughter through the window playing the piano.
