28 Days Later
Starring: Cillian Murphy (Jim), Naomie Harris (Selena), Megan Burns (Hannah), Brendan Gleeson (Frank), Christopher Eccleston (Major Henry West), Noah Huntley (Mark)
Jim and Selena join 2 other survivors, Frank and his daughter, Hannah. Frank had found a recorded message on the radio broadcast saying they have a cure for the virus and there’s help available for the uninfected in Manchester. They decide to take a chance and go to Manchester. When they arrive there, Frank gets infected and is shot dead by a group of soldiers. The soldiers take the remaining survivors into their heavily armed house. They soon find out the army don’t have a cure for the virus at all. Instead, they plan to just wait and hope the virus will die down on its own, and rape the women in order to re-populate England. Jim, Selena, and Hannah tries to escape, but gets caught. Major Henry West orders his soldiers to kill Jim, but he manages to get free and escape back to the house. To distract the other soldiers, he turns an infected soldier loose on them and saves Selena and Hannah, but not before getting shot by Major Henry. Luckily, they are still able to make their escape when an infected soldier grabs Major Henry; 28 days later, we see that Jim survived his bullet wound and the last of the rage-infected people are dying of hunger. Hannah hears a plane coming, so they all rush outside to spread out the sign they had been making. The people on the plane sees them and orders a helicopter to pick them up. Therefore, this indicates that the virus had not infected the rest of the world.
Comments about this movie?
Well, it was definitely not what I expected. I thought this movie would be like Dawn of the Dead with a lot of zombies running around. Instead, it was just people infected by a “rage” virus that had spread all over England. It wasn’t a great film, but it wasn’t awful either. The beginning was good because there was a lot of tension and suspense when the person wakes up from a coma and walks around a completely deserted London. I just wish there could’ve been a better way to get rid of the “infected” people rather than using guns to shoot at them. Plus, when the guy gets shot at the end, I don’t know how two inexperienced people would’ve realistically been able to save him. I’d say this is worth renting, but not worth buying.
*There is an alternate ending on the DVD. I think this ending would’ve been more realistic than the theatrical ending.
