Chicago (2002)

Posted by: Luna on Friday, January 24th, 2003

Starring: Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma Kelly), Renee Zellweger (Roxie Hart), John C. Reilly (Amos Hart), Richard Gere (Billy Flynn), Queen Latifah (Matron ‘Mama’ Morton)

Mama Morton gives Roxie’s diary to Velma Kelly to use as evidence to testify against Roxie in exchange for a lighter sentence. During the trial, Billy Flynn is able to discredit the diary as a fake and convince the jury that Roxie was the victim. Roxie is found not guilty. After the trial, we then find out that Billy had wrote a few fake entries in the diary and gave it to Mama Morton. A woman outside the courthouse suddenly shoots her lover and lawyer. The reporters all rush outside to get the new story, so Roxie is no longer the center of attention much to her dismay. Amos hopes to get back together with Roxie, but she walks away from him as she’s more upset about not being in the news anymore. Roxie tries to make it on her own, but to no avail. She does find success when she teams up with Velma Kelly as a double act. The last scene shows them dancing and performing, with fake machine guns, in front of a cheering audience.

Personal comments about this movie?
Likely one of the best musical movies I’ve seen. The dancing and singing were extravagant. The songs were catchy, especially the one where the women in jail were all singing and dancing about their crimes on men. In between songs, there was also a terrific story. I was quite impressed with Catherine Zeta-Jones’s dancing and singing abilities. Renee Zellweger was a decent singer, but not as good as Catherine. The only low point was Richard Gere’s singing. Other than that, I highly recommend this film.
