Starring: Adrien Brody (Wladyshaw Szpilman), Thomas Kretschmann (Capt. Wilm Hosenfeld), Frank Finlay (Father), Emilia Fox (Dorota), Ed Stoppard (Henryk)

Wladyshaw Szpilman returns to the ruins of Warsaw. He looks for food and hides there until a German officer (Thomas Kretschmann) discovers him. Rather than killing him on the spot, the German officer asks him to play the piano for him, then helps him by hiding him and giving him food and his coat; when the Germans are finally defeated, Szpilman leaves his hiding place only to be mistaken for a German and nearly shot at because he is still wearing the coat that the German officer gave him; Szpilman is finally able to go back to his piano playing; then, we learn that the German officer who helped him had died in a Russian concentration camp.

Personal comments about this movie?
Excellent movie, superb acting by Adrien Brody. His portrayal of Wladyshaw Szpilman was sympathetic. The re-enactments and sets were amazing. The horrific scenes (ruins of the city with torn buildings) must have been difficult for Roman Polanski to recreate because it held an emotional painful memory for him. I’m glad they focused on one specific story rather than telling the whole history of the war again.
