Gangs of New York

Posted by: Luna on Friday, December 20th, 2002

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio (Amsterdam Vallon), Daniel Day-Lewis (William ‘Bill the Butcher’ Cutting), Cameron Diaz (Jenny Everdeane), Jim Broadbent (William ‘Boss’ Tweed)

Amsterdam re-forms his late father’s Dead Rabbits gang and meets Bill the Butcher and his Nativists gang in battle. Just as they get ready to fight, the Union Navy fires their cannons on Manhattan to quell the riots, which are just breaking out. Amid the madness and smoke, Amsterdam kills Bill the Butcher. Jenny and Amsterdam end up burying Bill next to Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson), Amsterdam’s father. The graves overlook the New York skyline. Fast forward into the future, we see the skyline being built up, including the completion of the World Trade Center.

What a marvelous movie, definitely filmmaking at it’s best. The era was portrayed very well with the costumes and settings. The story, despite being a little slow sometimes, was engaging and well-paced though it had quite a few violent scenes. Outstanding performance by Daniel Day-Lewis! I consider him the best part of this film. A great comeback delivered. Such a shame he hasn’t done more movies lately. Leonardo DiCaprio also gave a good performance, proving again he’s not just a pretty face with no talent. Recommended film.
