Punch-Drunk Love

Posted by: Luna on Friday, November 1st, 2002

Starring: Adam Sandler (Barry Egan), Emily Watson (Lena Leonard), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Dean Trumbell), Luis Guzman (Lance)

Barry and Lena get chased by the young thugs from the phone sex service (which is actually a scam). Lena gets a bump on her head. Barry grabs the tire iron from them and starts beating them up instead. He then goes to Utah to confront the phone sex business owner, Dean. They exchange ugly words, but decide to call a truce. Afterwards, Barry goes to Lena’s apartment, tells her he loves her, and explains to her how he will be able to take her anywhere once the pudding lids turn into frequent flyer miles. She accepts and they kiss.

Comments about this movie?
One of the most bizaare movies I’ve seen. I can’t say I liked this film, but I didn’t hate it either. Most of the time I couldn’t understand what was going on. I’m happy to say that this is unlike anything Adam Sandler has done before. I don’t usually find him that funny in his comedy films, so I’m glad he did something totally different. One of the weirdest lines I’ve ever heard a character say to his lover: “I love you so much I could smash your face in with a sledgehammer.” What is that supposed to mean?
