Frida
Starring: Salma Hayek (Frida Kahlo), MÃa Maestro (Cristina Kahlo), Alfred Molina (Diego Rivera), Geoffrey Rush (Leon Trotsky), Ashley Judd (Tina Modotti), Edward Norton (Nelson Rockefeller)
Frida catches Diego with her sister, Cristina. She throws him out and they separate. Diego asks for a divorce after finding out she had a brief affair with communist Leo Trotsky. When Trotsky is murdered, she is arrested and thrown into prison, but Diego gets her out (due to lack of evidence against her and Diego in the involvement). Frida’s condition worsens (the toes on her right leg gets amputated due to gangrene). She and Diego end up remarrying. She tells him she wants to be cremated when she dies because she had spent so much of her life lying down. She shows up for her art show while being carried in on her bed. Diego remains faithful to Frida until her death in 1954 (shown offscreen).
Never heard of Frida Kahlo until I saw this movie. Wow, she was one hell of a woman to have endured so much pain in her life. From the horrific accident and the terrible pain she had to suffer daily afterwards, her love for and rage towards her husband Diego Rivera (because of his many affairs with other women), her infamous affairs with both men and women, to her passion for for art, she was a true survivor until the very end. Salma Hayek really showed her acting talent in this film and proved she’s not just a pretty face. Alfred Molina was charming and lovable as Diego Rivera. Both had great onscreen chemistry together. What a great film!
