Unfaithful
Starring: Richard Gere (Edward Sumner), Diane Lane (Connie Sumner), Olivier Martinez (Paul Martel), Erik Per Sullivan (Charlie Sumner)
Connie finds out Edward knows about her infidelity and that he killed her lover. They confront each other. Edward angrily accuses her of lying to him repeatedly and blames her for being ungrateful for all the sacrifices he’s made for his family. Connie has nothing to say after that; they cover up for each other to avoid arousing police’s suspicions; they sit together in the car and Connie suggests selling the house and everything they have and move to Mexico before the police figure out who killed Paul. We then see that they have parked the car in front of the police station and the viewers are left wondering whether Edward turned himself in or moved away.
Personal comments about the movie?
Terrific acting by Diane Lane. I’m glad this isn’t like ‘Fatal Attraction’ where the jealous lover tries to kill the spouse. Connie and Edward seemed to have a normal and happy marriage, so we don’t know why she would jeopardize her marriage by having an affair. Perhaps because she just wanted to or wanted to know what it would be like with another man? Who knows? I’m glad they left it with an open ending instead of a easy or simple ending.
