David never did get surgery to fix his face nor did he see Sofia again after drunkingly passing out on the street. Turns out he had went to sign up to have his body frozen (L.E. - Life Extension) until his face could be fixed, and then he committed suicide. Everything that happened, including the murder, his arrest, and psychiatric treatments, were just part of a virtual reality run by the Life Extension company. When David discovers all this, he is given 2 choices: continue his virtual reality life (stay in the dream) or terminate the dream with a repaired face 150 years into the future. He says goodbye to Sofia and chooses to end the dream by jumping off the building.
