13 Conversations About One Thing
Starring: Matthew McConaughey (Troy), David Connelly (Owen), John Turturro (Walker), Amy Irving (Patricia), Alan Arkin (Gene), Clea DuVall (Beatrice ‘Bea’), William Wise (Wade Bowman)
The main topic in this film is about happiness and how they achieved happiness. By the end, this is how the different characters ended up:
* Troy never stopped thinking about the girl (we later find out it was Beatrice he hit) he accidentally hit with his car. He ended up with a cut on his forehead from the accident which he kept reopening with a razor to keep from forgetting. He ends up in the hospital with an infection, still feeling depressed.
* Beatrice, an optimist, gets hit by Troy’s car. She survives, but suffers some injuries, and becomes depressed afterwards, thinking why did it have to happen to her, even comtemplating suicide. She talks to her friend, Dorrie (Tia Texada), about how she looked at a stranger one day who smiled at her (turns out to be Wade Bowman), and she started feeling hopeful and happy again.
* Gene fires Wade Bowman because he couldn’t stand him being so happy and smiley all the time. Feeling guilty, he helps Wade get a job at his ex-wife’s husband’s company without him knowing. In the end, Gene ends up unemployed, estranged from his son, and unhappy.
* Wade gets another job (thanks to Gene), and is still happy.
* Walker leaves his wife, Patricia, for his mistress, Helen (Barbara Sukowa). Helen decides to go back to her husband and dumps Walker. One of Walker’s students commits suicide.
* Patricia copes with Walker leaving her for another woman. In the end, she accepts it and moves on.
* Mickey Wheeler wins the lottery and quits his job (he worked for Gene) immediately. His mother-in-law sues him for half his winnings, but her case gets dismissed in court, so he gets to keep most of his money.
