Personal comments about this movie?
Russell Crowe certainly knows how to command presence and he did in this movie. Joaquin Phoenix plays the villain who had kills his own father for the throne, kills Maximus’s family, and starts hitting on his own sister. I guess that was pretty common back then?…Anyways, this was a great epic film that takes place during the Roman Empire. When Maximus loses his wife and son, his expression was so heartbreaking and you could see grief written all over his face. His thirst for vengeance is intense and heart pounding and is what keeps him going until the very end…there was such great details on the settings and costumes. The music was so haunting and beautiful. I especially loved the Enya song “We are free”.
