Abbie marries Ben and intends to move away with him and taking her and Robert’s son, Sam (Malcolm Stumpf). This results in a bitter custody battle between Abbie and Robert. Abbie pleads with him to stop this, but he refuses to budge. She reveals that Sam isn’t his son. He is actually Kevin’s son and she will be forced to use that information against him. Robert contacts Kevin and tells him about Sam. He begs him to sue custody for Sam, so it can be used against Abbie. Though he refuses at first, Kevin does show up in court and sues for custody of his biological son. Abbie furiously lashes out at Robert for bringing him into this. Robert tries to convince the court that he is Sam’s real father because he is the one who loved and raised him. Unfortunately, since he isn’t Sam’s biological father, the judge awards Abbie full custody. Crestfallen and crushed, Robert sinks into despair and depression. Over time, Abbie eventually relents and decides to allow him to see and spend time with Sam.
