Elizabeth

Starring: Cate Blanchette (Elizabeth I), Geoffrey Rush (Sir Francis Walsingham), Christopher Eccleston (Duke of Norfolk), Joseph Fiennes (Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester), Richard Attenborough (Sir William Cecil)

Queen Elizabeth I finds out from Sir Francis Walsingham about the conspiracy to have her assassinated. She executes all of the men behind the conspiracy, including the Duke of Norfolk, except her lover, Robert Dudley. She tells him she’ll keep him around to remind herself how close she once was to danger. Elizabeth has her servants cut her hair short, bleach her skin, and then she declares herself a virgin. She refuses to marry, saying she’s married to England. Before the ending credits roll, it states that:

* Elizabeth reigned for another 40 years

* Walsingham remained her most trusted and loyal advisor to the end

* She never married and never saw Robert Dudley in private again

* On her deathbead she was said to have whispered his name

* By the time of her death, England was the richest and most powerful country in Europe

* Her reign has been called the Golden Age

Beautiful filming (costumes, makeup, and cinematography), solid story, and great acting by Cate Blanchette, Joseph Fiennes, Geoffrey Rush, etc., but not exactly an accurate history lesson. The story mostly showed how Elizabeth transformed from a free-spirited princess into a ruthless queen. A well done movie.
