Jude
Starring: Christopher Eccleston (Jude Fawley), Kate Winslet (Sue Bridehead), Liam Cunningham (Phillotson), Rachel Griffiths (Arabella)
Jude’s son, little Jude (Ross Colvin Turnbull) kills himself and Jude and Sue’s other 2 children because they were in poverty. Overwhelmed by grief, Sue leaves Jude, as she could not handle living with him and knowing that his son killed her babies. She is convinced that God had punished her for their sins and turns to religion; Jude repeatedly tries to convince Sue to come back to him, but she does not relent; time passes, as Jude walks to the cemetery, he sees Sue standing on their children’s graves. He tries again to get her to come back home with him, but Sue refuses. She walks away and Jude shouts out “we were man and wife if ever two people were on this earth”.

A dark, depressing movie that ended tragically. Wonderful acting by both Christopher Eccleston and Kate Winslet. I’ve never read the book, but I wonder how close the movie is to it?
