Charles keeps winning, round after round. He is the darling of attention in the intellectual world. His growing obsession for fame overwhelms him, and it erases his morals of truth and fairness. What drove him to this extreme was to simply shine for once, instead of being overshadowed by his father’s works.

The lawyer who senses proclivity in the TV industry, Dick Goodwin, knows Charles has been cheating all along. He digs deeper and finds an old contestant of the show who was willing to fess up. Throughout their engagements, Dick respects Charles so much that he goes to great lengths to convince himself that Charles is innocent.

Dick talks to Herbie Stempel, the disgruntled contestant, and gets the low down on who the show is rigged — even revealing how the contestants are to act and fake jitters.

The word gets out on the street. Dick and Herbie are to go to court to accuse the studio of fraud. Herbie, being a limelight sucker, destroys his credibility by acting goofy throughout the trial. The court was ready to dismiss the accusations… until Herbie mentions Charles’ name.

Then storm of reckoning quickly brewed over Charles and his family. The innuendos made about the Van Doren family breaks bonds of trust between Charles and his father, and drives his fathers’ name through the mud.

From the enormity of pressure, he public announces his wrong-doing to the court. Most of the court was taken aback, and tried to twist the situation, and applauding Charles for fessing. But it was the last judge, who spoke up and said boldly that what he did was wrong; his statement echoed throughout the court, and casted the onimous
ruling over Charles. The ruling was a major blow to the intellectual world, and cascaded to the rest of his family.

The movie executes the feeling to the audience that even among intellectual giants, the fundamental respect for honesty is paramount.
